The scouts from Troop 598 spent the night at the base of Mt St Helens to get an early assault on the volcano’s southern side in the wee hours of Aug. 26. As the sun rose to the east Mt. Adams made a breathtaking view and Mt. Hood could be seen in the distance looking south. At the summit Mt. Rainier came into view looking north over the actively venting (yet still partially snow covered) dome and Spirit Lake. By afternoon Mt. Jefferson also could be seen through the haze just to the right of Hood.
