A look at the Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills session at Camp Curran. Overnight temperatures dipping to 16 degrees kept the lake completely frozen, but made the hot veggie stew all the more delicious. Highly recommended for all the new scout dads to put on their to-do list… just try to pick a warmer month!

The scouts from Troop 598 were back in the mountains, this time inside Mount Rainier Nat’l Park to camp at beautiful Mowich Lake. After lunch, the group set out on a hike around the crystal clear lake, climbing to Eunice Lake and continuing on to the Ranger tower at Tolmie Peak, an elevation gain of more than 1,000 feet. We enjoyed breathtaking views of Mt. Rainier along the way and arrived at the tower just in time to see sunset fall over the Puget Sound area. A chilly wind along the ridge encouraged us not to dawdle and the hike back to camp was mostly by flashlight through the dark.
The meal plan organized by Jack proved a good choice, as the simple-but-hearty Chili and Mac was easily prepared in only two cooking pots, with an additional pan for the garlic bread that all enjoyed. Even getting back to camp at 9:30 and needing to prepare the late meal, the Scouts were able to cook, feed and retire for the night without disturbing the nearby campers. Good job Troop 598!
With the food secured against any curious wildlife, the scouts could relax and sleep in Sunday morning. After breakfast the boys were free to team up and explore the trails and shoreline of Mowich Lake. As you can see in these photos, the Scouts had a great time on this fall campout.

Troop 598 held a Court of Honor Oct. 13 at Karshner Elementary in Puyallup. Many of the merit badges presented were earned by the boys who went to summer camp and those that worked on sessions throughout the summer break. Some scouts were advanced in rank, but the highlight of the meeting was presenting three Eagle Scout awards.

The scouts from Troop 598 spent the night at the base of Mt St Helens to get an early assault on the volcano’s southern side in the wee hours of Aug. 26. As the sun rose to the east Mt. Adams made a breathtaking view and Mt. Hood could be seen in the distance looking south. At the summit Mt. Rainier came into view looking north over the actively venting (yet still partially snow covered) dome and Spirit Lake. By afternoon Mt. Jefferson also could be seen through the haze just to the right of Hood.

Several scouts from Troop 598 headed to Monroe, Wash., for a week of summer camp activity at BSA Camp Piggot. Counselors Noah and Steffan helped ensure the scouts had a great time throughout the week. The list of the merit badges worked on included Cooking, Computers, Environmental Science, Canoeing, Archery, Orienteering, Pioneering, Emergency Preparedness, Fingerprinting, Art … and a lot more! Troop 598 worked hard to be one of the elite groups at camp by participating in a wide variety of skill areas, attending chapel services, having excellent inspections (rated better than 100 points average during the week) and helping shore up the hillside at the waterfront area. It was a great week and hopefully the following photos will help share the fun and team spirit of summer camp.
