One of the coolest things for those at Fire Mountain this summer was the chance to brave the quarter-mile zipline that stretched out over Challenge Lake to a landing pad on the island. Here are some shots of the Troop 598 Scouts taking the ride. Also be sure to check out the photos from the rest of summer camp.

Penrose Point campout (Oct. 2016) https://troop598.info/penrose-point-2016/ Sun, 30 Oct 2016 23:47:04 +0000 http://troop598.info/?p=7448 Troop 598 Scouts camped out in the rain at Penrose Point, which included a service project pulling a truckload of the invasive English Ivy. The best meal of the trip had to be Carl’s enchillada meal cooked in a dutch oven Saturday night. All of the cooking for the Scouts and adults was done over the open flame in the fire pit which worked quite well. The Scouts visited the bay twice during high tide periods Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning but were unable to see the sand spit (although Carl and Steve did get to walk partway out while the tide was out late Saturday night.) The campsite also was visited by a family of pesky raccoons early Sunday morning.

WashJam 2016 https://troop598.info/washjam-2016/ Fri, 26 Aug 2016 23:47:36 +0000 http://troop598.info/?p=7075 Troop 598 took part in the 2016 Washington Jamboree at nearby JBLM in Tacoma. Washjam offered a vast range of activities and demonstrations for all types of Scouts: archery, chess, miniature golf, automotive maintenance, ham radio, coin collecting, rocketry, fly fishing, cooking, axe throwing, wilderness survival, and many, many (many!) others. There were native American teepees and a Civil War encampments as well as impressive military vehicles that the scouts could climb through. Throughout the grounds were massive pioneering structures constructed by the Order of the Arrow members. After a scorching Friday afternoon, Scouts rocked the evening away with the US Army band. On Saturday, gale force winds ripped through the area and wreaked havoc on the tents and shelters. After considering the safety of the Scouts and equipment the decision was made to break camp early and the Troop headed home following the evening flag ceremony,

Pack Forest campout (February 2016) https://troop598.info/pack-forest-2016/ Mon, 08 Feb 2016 00:47:13 +0000 http://troop598.info/?p=6016 Troop 598 staged its annual Pack Forest campout Feb. 6-7 2016. The service project took us to a new area as we cleared ground debris farther into the University of Washington facility than previous years. Afterward, some of the scouts worked with Mr. Leon on the Soil and Water Conservation merit badge while part of the remaining group embarked on a hike through the woods and hillside. Back in camp some of the scouts helped our visiting Webelos work on skills at the axe pit, fire ring and camp kitchen areas. Overnight the crisp weather lost its edge making way for a pleasant Sunday morning with a hearty Mountain Man breakfast before a final cleanup in the cabins and picnic shelter. A couple of the new scouts worked on an orienteering course before the final departure.
